Cairns (Cans, Canes, cannnnns, how the heck do you pronounce it!?)

Sydney from the planeSo we got up early yet again to catch a shuttle and flight up to Cairns. Yes we still haven’t quite figured out how to prounounce this darn town’s name. Every time we try to say it correctly someone corrects us. Then next thing we know we’re wrong again and its back to the other way… we’ve given up, but are looking forward to our time here. As usual we had flight snafu’s – i swear it’s different in every airport! this time it was my weight again for my housing but this time i was informed that dumbells aren’t allowed. So Jessica, being the saint that she is, ended up checking her backpack with said “dumbbell” and once again we’re over on weight… luckily they let us slide. cirsis diverted.

Flight went smoothly and we arrive in Cairns and its 34° – that’s Celcius not Farenheit which means its in the 90s. We just had some cooler days in Sydney and Katoomba and now we’re in the sticky hotness of the summer and the wet season (tho not so wet so far). We are able to check in, then head out to check out the town. (Our mountain view room also happened to have an ocean view too – not too shabby!)

Room View MountainsWe end up walking down to the city center and have a look around. Fairly touristy with options to sign up for just about anything. We found the 1 free wifi spot in town, the McDonald’s. Connections were iffy but it seemed that other people were even video chatting and we decided taking up our precious bandwidth… after having some ice cream we found the lagoon – a sizable pool right by the ocean and free to the public. We decided to come back another day to enjoy it and slowly worked our way back to the hotel to clean up and then head out for a nice dinner.

Seafood Ramen

We’d read about a sushi bar that had a conveyor belt so we decided to give it a go. Both of us also ordered main dishes and were stuffed ( a common theme here!). We both watched the belt go around (and around) and eventually decided on a few pieces each. Our main dishes were huge and I even had strange pink things in my seafood ramen. Overall quite yummy. We retired early with full bellies as we were up early the next day for our great barrier reef trip!
